Dichotomy and Contrasts—Characters

Murphy

Captain Murphy appears strong and commanding, but loss and guilt quickly overwhelm him. Rather than facing his pain, he isolates himself and turns to alcohol, leaving him vulnerable to Ferriman’s manipulation.

Katie responds to suffering very differently. Although physically small and outwardly delicate, she repeatedly confronts danger rather than avoiding it. Their contrast suggests true strength comes less from physical authority than from resilience, moral courage and the willingness to face difficult truths.

Santos, Greer, Dodge, and Munder

The male salvage crewmen are physically capable, yet they repeatedly overlook Katie’s warnings because they are focused on leaving the ship with riches.

Katie tries to warn them through clues, messages and finally direct intervention, but they fail to understand the danger until it is too late. Their experience reinforces Katie’s role as the story’s moral compass: While others are distracted by pride, greed or selfish desire, she consistently recognizes the truth and tries to protect them.

1962 Shipmates

Katie is the only child aboard the Antonia Graza and the adults around her generally treat her with special care. Although she participates within an adult world, she is not expected to behave like an adult or be exposed to everything adults do—She is treated in an age appropriate manner.

This is especially clear at the Captain’s Ball. When Katie becomes bored and sits alone, a friendly officer takes time to join her and the captain later invites her to share the first dance. For a moment, the entire room adjusts around the presence of a child.

These scenes present childhood as something worth protecting. Katie is included in the life of the ship, but the adults recognize she occupies a different place within it.

Even after death, this distinction remains important. Katie is surrounded by corruption, yet she never becomes part of it. She is in the adult world, but the adult world never fully enters her.
