Expanded Content
The 2003 Ghost Ship Collector’s Edition DVD and original movie website included additional material which expanded Katie’s role beyond what appears in the finished film.
Katie’s Narrative
In one feature, Katie speaks directly to the audience about being trapped aboard the Antonia Graza for forty years and trying to warn visitors about the ship.
This changes her role considerably. Instead of appearing only as a mysterious figure, Katie becomes the narrator, witness and guide who explains what has happened and urges others to be careful.
Her tone is not threatening or vengeful. She speaks with concern, reinforcing the idea that even after decades of captivity, her main goal is still to protect others.
The Word Puzzle Messages
Katie also leaves hidden messages using her word-puzzle toys. These include warnings such as “YOU ARE IN DANGER,” “LISTEN CLOSELY,” and “LEAVE THIS SHIP NOW.”
Other messages reveal more of her personality. “I AM KATIE” emphasizes she is a person, not simply “the ghost” haunting a ship, while “YOU MUST BE SEASICK” shows a playful sense of humor.
The puzzles also demonstrate Katie’s agency. Rather than creating confusion or fear, she uses language, clues and creativity to reveal the truth and help others understand the danger around them.
Artwork of an Innocent Child
In this DVD special feature, Katie tells her own story to the audience through narration, drawings, film clips and additional footage. She describes her happy voyage, the massacre, her forty years of captivity and her ongoing efforts to warn others.
The feature gives Katie a much clearer voice. Instead of remaining a typical mysterious “ghost,” she becomes a witness who explains what happened aboard the Antonia Graza and why Ferriman cannot control her.
Most importantly, the additional material makes Katie more personal and sympathetic. Her drawings, memories and direct address reveal a child who understands what happened to her, but has not become bitter or vengeful.
The result is unusual for a horror child—The extra material does not make Katie more frightening—It makes her more human.
