Narrative Overview

Katie Harwood is a young passenger aboard the doomed ocean liner Antonia Graza in the 2002 horror film Ghost Ship. Although she is a supporting character, Katie becomes an important counterpart to marine salvager Maureen Epps and the demonic Jack Ferriman.

Unlike the traditional “creepy child” of horror, Katie remains innocent, compassionate and protective despite everything she suffers. Rather than becoming a source of terror, she repeatedly tries to save others from it.

Significance

Katie stands apart because horror never transforms her innocence into something threatening or corrupt. Her period appearance, gentle personality, courage and concern for others, instead preserve a recognizable image of childhood within an otherwise brutal story.

Her enduring importance is reflected in the artwork for Shout! Factory’s 20th-anniversary Blu-ray re-release of the film, which places Katie prominently at the center of the film’s imagery.

Synopsis

(Spoilers follow)

In 1962, Katie is the only child traveling aboard the luxury liner Antonia Graza. Her happy voyage turns horrific when the demonic Jack Ferriman manipulates people aboard the ship into murdering its passengers and crew for a cache of gold. Katie survives the initial massacre, but is later killed (off screen) because she witnessed what happened. Katie’s death, however, is not the end of her story.

Her spirit remains trapped aboard the ship for forty years, but she does not “haunt” the ship like in a typical ghost story. Because Ferriman cannot control her innocent young soul, Katie secretly warns new visitors to the ship and works against him to save lives.

When Maureen Epps and her salvage crew discover the abandoned liner, Katie recognizes Epps may listen to her. Through clues, appearances, and eventually her own memories, Katie reveals the truth about the ship and Ferriman along with his plan to use it as a demonic trap.

With Katie’s help, Epps destroys the Antonia Graza, freeing its imprisoned souls. In their final moment together, Katie remains beside Epps and gives her a grateful smile before ascending heavenward with the other freed souls.

Her story therefore ends not with vengeance or despair, but with liberation. Even after decades of enduring the horror of the ship, Katie remains what she was from the beginning—An innocent child trying to protect others.
