In mid-Century British culture, imparting faith to younger generations was still important for many families. This copy of the scriptures given to Katie by her grandparents was never shown, but figuratively highlights her role in the ensuing spiritual warfare she would later be engaged in. The dates surrounding Katie are also important to the Christian calendar, making her a direct contrast to the demonic Ferriman.

Katie’s empty grave and headstone with the missing date are symbolic and revealing. In this conceptual alternate ending, Epps searches for Katie’s living family members so she can show them her locket and tell them what happened to her. Near Mt. Vernon N.Y., Epps finds Katie was not forgotten and that her short, seemingly insignificant life touched more people than she expected.

Figure 8

The mission school for girls built in Katie’s memory can be seen as a way to find meaning and purpose despite evil and suffering. A possible epilogue consistent with Katie’s character could be Epps discovering Katie’s church and community were motivated by her tragedy to not let her loss define her life—Rather, to do good works in her memory such as fundraising and building a girl’s school in Rhodesia.
