Subverting Stereotypes—Summary
Taken together, Katie reverses many familiar horror-child conventions. She is not malevolent, passive, uncanny or corrupted, but compassionate, active, trustworthy and emotionally sincere.
The horror comes from the corrupted world around her rather than from Katie herself. Her innocence survives, her vulnerability becomes a source of moral strength and she guides others toward truth instead of leading them into danger.
Katie therefore does more than simply differ from the typical horror child—She turns the familiar trope in the opposite direction. She is a child within horror who consistently resists becoming part of the horror.
Katie reverses the horror-child pattern across character, story, appearance, sound and audience response.
